A VR (valve removal) lubricator is commonly used to install and retrieve VR plugs and back pressure valves through wellhead side outlets and tubing hangers while the well remains under pressure. This allows wellhead valves to be serviced or replaced without having to kill the well, saving rig time and keeping the operation controlled.
